My Own Safari Park

When I go on safari, I don’t go very far

I do not even have to walk or ever take a car

I just look through my window at the great outside

I do not have to follow paths or even take a ride

For out there in the garden, encouraged by the food

All the local bird life will come to feed their brood

Today we have a pheasant cock, his harem of two hens

And looking for a nesting place, a pair of little wrens

A pair of red-legged partridges are in residence

They come each day and eat their fill; all at my expense

The great tits and the blue tits are fighting for the nuts

They all are very welcome; I build them little huts

We also have two waterhens: red flashes on their beaks

No doubt they’ll be nesting in the next few weeks

Big fat wood pigeons and doves are feasting on my wheat

They waddle round the garden; all they do is eat

All things are not perfect; mixed with sun and rain

A little yellowhammer, killed on my window pane

Sometimes we get a sparrow hawk swooping from above

It's only when he's hungry, he'll take a tasty dove

A mouse is getting very fat, in a wall he has a nest

He carries wheat away all day; he never seems to rest

He seems to spend the whole day long, stocking up his larder

As long as there is wheat there, he could work no harder

And after all the things I’ve seen, it really makes me think

I only have been standing here behind the kitchen sink

Tho’ I’ve been on safari; I’ve never been away

I can enjoy it time and time again; I see it every day
